VIRGINIA BEACH, VA (April 1, 2014) – Spring break travel is making a comeback in Coastal Virginia, with nearly two-thirds of Hampton Roads residents planning to take at least one spring vacation this year, according to the AAA Tidewater Spring Break Travel Poll.

Sixty-two percent of those polled said they are planning at least one leisure trip this spring, nine percent more than the 53 percent who said they traveled over last year’s spring break. Nearly 60 percent of local residents who are traveling are planning two or more trips during this year’s spring break, while 24 percent plan to take at least three spring break getaways.

“Spring break travel has increased this year as our members are feeling more confident about their personal economic situations. Gas prices are lower than this time last year and some unusually cold weather has prompted travel to warmer climates,” said Georjeane Blumling, AAA Tidewater spokesperson.

A spring break trip was defined in the poll as a trip at least 50 miles away from home and requiring an overnight stay during March, April or May.

The top five destinations for Tidewater spring break travelers, according to the poll, are:

  1. North Carolina (32 percent of travelers)
  2. Washington, DC (27 percent)
  3. Richmond (23 percent)
  4. South Carolina (18 percent)
  5. Baltimore (14 percent)

The Caribbean Islands are the top foreign destination for Tidewater travelers, with 10 percent planning to travel there this spring.

Blumling advised those who will be traveling over spring break to budget for gasoline by using AAA’s Fuel Cost Calculator at The calculator will estimate fuel costs based on the traveler’s make and model of vehicle and the route they are traveling. Travelers can also shop online for the lowest gas prices in any area of the U.S. using the free AAA Mobile app for Android and iPhone, as well as the online version at

The 2014 AAA Tidewater Spring Break poll was conducted from March 4 to March 10, 2014 and surveyed 664 AAA Tidewater members. It has a margin of error of +/-3.7 percent.
