VIRGINIA BEACH, Va., (June 6, 2014) – The month of June has been designated as “Move Over Awareness Month” starting this year. During this 30-day period, safety advocates across the Commonwealth have initiated educational campaigns in increasing drivers’ awareness concerning the protection of public safety professionals, tow operators and highway safety workers, to include safety service patrols on Virginia’s roads.

“Public safety, tow operators, and highway safety workers are in constant danger of being injured or even killed by drivers on the roads,” said Georjeane Blumling, Vice President of Public Affairs for AAA Tidewater Virginia. “The best thing motorists can do to keep these workers safe is to move over and slow down for them.”

The Virginia State Police continue to push forward with the Drive 2 Save Lives campaign that supports and educates motorists about the Move Over law that helps protect lives on the road. The law applies to not only law enforcement officers, but emergency response vehicles, highway maintenance vehicles and tow trucks equipped with flashing amber lights. According to the Law Enforcement Officer Memorial Fund, 11 law enforcement officers were killed in 2013 when a vehicle struck them.

Every state in the nation has a Move Over law on record. Visit http://www.moveoverlaws.com to find out more about these laws.

A new public service announcement (PSA) promoting the law, produced by the Virginia State Police in partnership with the Virginia Department of Transportation, is now available in both English and Spanish: http://www.youtube.com/user/vspvideos.
