AAA Tidewater Virginia Hosting Free Shred-A-Thon Events

Insurance & Consumer Tips
thumbs up

VIRGINIA BEACH, VA, (March 2, 2016) - AAA Tidewater Virginia is hosting free Shred-A-Thons at two different locations for AAA members and non-members. Shredding unneeded documents is a step to protecting your identity and helping the environment in the process. Shredded paper is taken and used to make recyclable paper that would otherwise take up space in the landfill.

The Shred-A-Thon events are free and open to the public.  AAA Tidewater members and the general public may bring up to five banker boxes full of junk mail and personal papers to the on-site shredding location at AAA Tidewater’s corporate branch located at 5366 Virginia Beach Blvd in Virginia Beach between 8:30am to 12:30pm on Saturday, March 12th. There will also be an opportunity on March 26th from 8:30am to 12.30pm at AAA’s Newport News branch located at 733 J. Clyde Morris Blvd in Newport News.

Documents for shredding may include names, birth dates, and account numbers.

“We want to help protect and reduce the chances of people becoming victims of identity theft by offering this free opportunity to shred sensitive documents before they end up in the wrong hands,” said Georjeane Blumling, AAA Tidewater’s spokesperson.

Additionally, according to the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), every one ton of paper recycled saves enough energy to power the average American home for 6 months, conserves 7,000 gallons of water, and prevents filling 3.3 cubic yards of landfill space.

Plastic bags and binders, folders, laminated paper, or other non-paper materials should be removed prior to attending the Shred-a-Thon.  Shredded material will be recycled.

AAA Tidewater and certified shredding professionals from Iron Mountain, will assist with loading documents into bins, which will then be dumped into a truck that shred large volumes of documents into pin-sized bits.
