VIRGINIA BEACH, VA (December 19, 2014) In Virginia, a record breaking trend is evident in the over 2.8 million travelers expected for the holiday. This represents a 3.5 percent over 2013 and the highest recorded number since 2001. Auto travel is leading the way with a 4.2 percent over 2013, representing slightly over 2.5 million people taking to the road.

“The fact that the number of Virginians expected to travel this year-end illustrates the importance of being with loved ones for the holidays, regardless of a struggling economy,” said Georjeane Blumling, Vice President of Public Affairs for AAA Tidewater Virginia. “The recovery rate of the number of holiday travelers has once again out-paced the economic recovery.”

BY CAR / GAS PRICES Today’s Virginia average price of gasoline is at the lowest level in five years and 80 cents lower than last year, a welcome gift for holiday travelers. Gas prices have fallen for 81 days in a row, helping to increase Americans’ disposable income 3.5 percent from year-ago levels, which has had a positive effect on travel.

AIR: Average discounted round-trip airfares across 40 top domestic routes are expected to fall seven percent this year, to $186. This is influenced by the availability of discounted rates from low-cost carriers in several top markets. AAA encourages travelers to consider the full cost of a ticket when purchasing air travel, as many airlines charge ancillary fees for checked bags, meals, priority boarding and seat assignments.

“The holidays are about celebrating with friends and family. Motorists should take their time and be even more aware of road conditions this time of the year. We want everyone to drive distraction free, buckle up and have a happy holiday,” says Blumling.
