VIRGINIA BEACH, VA. (February 9, 2018) – Gas prices are rising with the consumer gasoline demand hitting the highest point in 2018. Nationally, the current average price for gas is $2.60. In Virginia, the average price for a gallon of regular gas is $2.42 which is only a one cent increase from last week, but 12 cents more than last month, and an additional 31 cents over last year. However, some areas in the Commonwealth, such as Hampton Roads, are experiencing lower gas prices at $2.37.

According to the Energy Information Administration’s latest weekly petroleum status report, demand registered at 9.11 million b/d. That is 70,000 b/d more than the previous week and nearly 170,000 b/d more than the same time in 2017. Typically demand reaches its highest rates in March when the spring driving season kicks off. Strong consumer confidence in the economy is just one factor that has contributed to drivers using more gasoline than usual this winter.
