AAA Warns of Higher Prices as Gasoline and Crude Exports Soar

Virginia Beach, VA (February 23, 2018) – Just as Virginia was beginning to see a drop in gas prices, AAA warns motorists that prices may be on the rise with gasoline and crude exports jumping. The current average price for gas in Virginia is $2.35 which is three cents less than last week, a four cent decrease from last month, but a 25 cent increase from last year. Hampton Roads gas prices are even lower at $2.29 today.

“Depending on where in the country you are filling up your tank, gasoline prices motorists may experience large increases on the week,” said Georjeane Blumling, AAA Tidewater Virginia spokesperson. “The price volatility can be attributed to the unexpected rise in gasoline and crude oil exports recently ahead of the spring season. Motorists should prepare to pay more at the pump.”

According to the Energy Information Administration’s (EIA) Weekly Petroleum Status Report for the week ending on February 16, U.S. exports of gasoline and crude oil took big leaps. The growing trend ahead of the spring driving season could mean that refineries will produce even higher amounts of gasoline to feed growing domestic and global demand. Steady growth in crude exports underscores that growth in domestic production has led to the U.S. gaining more exports prowess to meet growth in global appetite for it. For drivers, increasing gasoline and crude exports have helped to keep pump prices higher than they have been in the years when exports from the U.S. were much lower.
