Make Your Own Luck on the Road This St. Patty’s Day

AAA offers tips on how to stay safe while celebrating the wearing of the green

Green Car Guide

VIRGINIA BEACH, VA (March 14, 2018) - St. Patrick’s Day is fast approaching, whether you’re Irish or not, thousands of people come together to partake in green attire, Irish food, parades, and drinking green beer. St. Patrick’s Day is ranked in the top four holidays known for drinking occasions. This year, St. Patrick’s Day is on a Saturday (March 17), making this a weekend long festivity. The last time St. Patrick’s Day landed on a Saturday was in 2012. According to the Department of Motor Vehicles (DMV) 106 crashes that were alcohol related occurred over the weekend with 76, luckily no fatalities. In 2017, there were 2 fatalities out of 85 crashes involving alcohol between midnight and 2:59am.

“Luck of the Irish on the road is about being a sensible and defensive driver. Make sure you and your loved ones stay safe on the road by being a responsible driver,” advises Georjeane Blumling, Vice President of Public Affairs for AAA Tidewater Virginia. “Good times are often ruined by drunken driving crashes, which have great impact on the lives involved financially, physically and emotionally.”

AAA Tidewater Virginia would like to remind motorists to stay safe with a few tips:

  • At social events, designate a non-drinking driver who can get everyone home safely.

  • Call a friend or family member for a ride if you've been drinking.

  • Set up a ride-sharing app on your phone for easy access if you have had too much to drink.

  • Keep a taxi number in your cell phone call list to call for a ride home.

  • As a party host, offer a variety of non-alcoholic drink alternatives, provide a gift to guests who volunteer to be designated drivers and arrange transportation through programs for guests who have been drinking.

  • Don’t let friends drive drunk!
