VIRGINIA BEACH, Va., (November 21, 2014) – Across the Commonwealth gas prices continue to slide as travelers head out for the Thanksgiving holiday. Over 1.3 million Virginians will travel at least 50 miles during the holiday period between Wednesday and Sunday next week. This is the highest number to journey for Thanksgiving since 2008 and a 3.4% increase from 2013. Over 90% of those traveling will take to the roadways with 1.18 million expected for the holiday period. The current price for a gallon of self-serve regular gas is sitting at $2.71 in Hampton Roads which is 23 cents below last month, and 43 cents less than last year at this time.  Across Virginia prices have been falling for 144 consecutive days.

“The continuing lower prices are a welcome beginning to the holiday travel season,” noted Georjeane Blumling, spokesperson for AAA Tidewater. “Hopefully, Virginia will continue to see some of the lowest prices in the country for the rest of 2014.”

While AAA expects the average price of gas to continue to fall, there are other welcome reliefs on the roads with Virginia Department of Transportation (VDOT) preparing for increased traffic by lifting many lane closers across the Commonwealth.  Motorists can stay informed on Hampton Road’s traffic conditions and construction information by tuning to the Highway Advisory Radio (HAR) at 1680 AM.
