Virginia’s Travelers Increase for Memorial Day 2015

A strong economy and low gas prices drive 4.2 percent increase in holiday travel over 2014

VIRGINIA BEACH, Va., (May 20, 2015) – As Memorial Day weekend approaches, AAA Travel projects over one million Virginians (1,061,134) will travel at least 50 miles for home this holiday weekend. It is the largest number of travelers since 2005 and a 4.2 percent increase from 2014. The Memorial Day holiday travel period is defined as Thursday, May 21 to Monday, May 25.

Virginia’s Highlights for 2015 Memorial Day Travel Forecast:

The 2015 Memorial Day forecast is expected to mark the highest travel volume for the holiday in 10 years, since 2005.

  • A 4.8 percent more travelers (952,358) will travel by automobile than last year.
  • Today’s Virginia average price of gas is $2.49, .98 cents lower than the average price for last year. Hampton Roads average price of gas is currently $2.52, which is $1.01 cheaper than last year.
  • Holiday air travel is expected to increase 1.8 percent (77,491) leisure travelers.

 “Last year, soaring gas prices and a recovering economy resulted in far fewer trips over Memorial Day Weekend,” said Georjeane Blumling, Public Relations Vice President for AAA Tidewater Virginia.  “The good news is lower gasoline prices and an abundance of travel bargains have Americans feeling better about taking a road trip this Memorial Day weekend, which should help tourism-based economic activity throughout the nation.”

Tips for drivers

AAA recommends motorists inspect their vehicle and check battery and tire condition before heading out on a holiday getaway. Members can download the AAA mobile app (, visit or call 1-800-AAA-HELP to request roadside assistance in the event of a breakdown.
